Tic Disorder Due to a General Medical Condition

Tic Disorder Due to a General Medical Condition

A. Motor tics and/or vocal tics have been present at some time during the illness. (A tic is a sudden, rapid, recurrent, nonrhythmic motor movement or vocalization.)

B.  There is evidence from the history, physical examination, or laboratory findings that the disturbance is the direct physiological consequence of a general medical condition.

This is a new tic diagnostic category and conforms to other DSM diagnoses where there is a literature that suggests symptoms can present seconday to a known medical condition. The development of this category will result in those with tics due to a medical condition not being included in the Tic Disorder Not Otherwise Specified category.

The Yale Global Tic Severity Scale is proposed as a possible measure for assessing severity in this diagnosis.
This disorder is not listed in DSM-IV; therefore, DSM-IV criteria for this disorder do not exist.
